WHY IS MY HEAT PUMP STEAMING?

Is your heat pump smoking or steaming?

If you are scared about seeing steam or white smoke coming off of your heat pump, you are in luck, because that is perfectly normal!

What does the Heat Pump Defrost cycle look like?

Every 60-90 minutes your heat pump with ask itself: “Do I have frost on me?” If it does, it will run a defrost cycle. This will turn off the outside fan and make a whoosh sound. The defrost cycle will run for a couple of minutes (you may also feel some cool drafts inside your home) before it turns the heat pump back on.

In this video we explain why steam comes off of your heat pump in the winter and how it is actually a sign that everything is working as it should.

We hope this helps you save some money by not needing a service technician to come to your home when nothing is actually wrong!

“This video has been SOOOO helpful to me this morning! It’s 2 degrees this morning in Michigan! Buuurrrrrr! I looked out the window and for the first time I saw clouds of “smoke” coming from my unit! Now, I know what is happening and it’s not on fire! LOL! Thank You!” – Mindy K.
