How To Make Sure Your Heat Pump Does NOT Run Auxiliary Heat

Is your Heat Pump only running in Auxiliary (or emergency) heat? If you want to make sure your heat pump only runs in heat mode and does not turn on the auxiliary heat, there are a couple of things you can do to make sure it does not turn on.

Furnace Heat Mode

Making sure your furnace is in heat mode is usually a function of the thermostat.

On the heat pump thermostat there is typically a system switch with the options of heat, cool, or emergency heat. Emergency heat is auxiliary heat. When the thermostat is in the emergency heat position, your system will run in auxiliary heat all the time.

If your furnace is in the heat mode and the auxiliary heat is coming on more than you’d like…

Try to leave your home temperature set at one point and not let the house cool down during the day or night. If the temperature is extremely cold outside, your system needs to work harder to get back to your set temperature. Your system will use auxiliary heat to reach your desired temperature faster.
